BASIC SECURITY OFFICER TRAINING CERTIFICATION COURSE OUTLINE

I. POWERS TO ARREST

Instruction in the standards of conduct for security personnel designed to educate the trainee to carry out his or her duties with caution and within the confines of law as prescribed by the Department of Consumer affairs and the California Penal Code.

AB 2880 increased the requirements from 3 hours to 40 hours of required training for security guards and an 8-hour refresher course every 12 months after completing the 40-hour course.

A security guard must complete an 8-hour training course prior to being placed on post. In addition, 16 hours of training is required within the first month and an additional 16 within the first 6 months.

II. TEAR GAS

Post approved training for lifetime certification to carry and use Tear Gas/Mace/Pepper Spray and the non-lethal use of force.

III. REPORT WRITING

Review of the preparation and format of the various reports every officer is required to complete by the employer. Overview of the required elements that every report should contain.

IV. FIREARMS

Classroom instruction in the use of firearms covering proper shooting techniques, laws pertaining to the use of firearms and deadly force, “SHOOT-DON’T SHOOT” situations and the care and cleaning of firearms. Shooting at our indoor shooting range, using .38/.357 revolvers for qualification to carry a firearm. Qualification with additional calibers are available.

REQUIREMENTS: Permanent guard card, proof of U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident Alien Status and picture I.D. Student is responsible for payment for the application fee to the State for this course.

EXPEDITE PROCESSING. In order to expedite the Security Guard application and fingerprinting process, the following steps should be taken.

  • Step 1: The Security Guard must have received the “Power to Arrest” training and passed the examination.
  • Step 2: The Security Guard applicant must submit fingerprints electronically using LIVE SCAN. The FBI and DOJ fingerprinting fees along with a rolling fee must be paid directly to Crossroad Security providing the Live Scan service.
  • Step 3: Crossroad Security will submit the security guard application online. Security Guard registration fees must be paid by credit card at the time of submission.
  • Step 4: Once the Bureau has received the online application and criminal history clearances, the cleared security guard will appear on the Bureau’s Web site. When the Security Guard registration has been cleared and appears on the Bureau’s site, a screen-printout from the Web site may be used as an interim Security Guard registration and the Security Guard can be placed on assignment. The actual Security Guard card will be mailed to the applicant and should be received in 7 to 10 working days.
  • Step 5: A security Guard placed on assignment must have the following documents on his or her person.
    • Screen printout of the Bureau’s approval obtained from the Bureau’s Web site or a valid Security guard card.
    • A valid photo identification.

Firearm Requirements:

To apply for a firearm permit, you must:

  • Take 14-hour course (8 hours classroom, 6 hours range) in the carrying and use of firearms given by a Bureau-certified firearms training instructor at a Bureau certified training facility.
  • Pass the written and range exams given at the end of the course.
  • Be a United states citizen or have permanent legal alien status; and
  • Submit a firearm permit application, proper application fees and Firearm Permit Live Scan form signed by the Live Scan site Operator.
  • RENEWALS—Firearm permits expire two year from the date of issuance. An applicant must requalify four times during the life of the permit: twice during the first year after the date of issuance, and twice during the second year. Requalifications must be at least four months apart. The application for renewal should be submitted to the Bureau within 60 days before the expiration date. The current fee for renewing a firearm permit is $88.00. You may not renew your permit once you have allowed it to expire. You must instead apply for a new permit.
